With an average of 78 children abandoned for every 10,000 births, Bulgaria has one of the highest child abandonment rates in the world for children under three. Put into homes, the orphans are forced to leave the centers when they reach adulthood, but they are rarely prepared for life on their own and are exposed to poverty, disinheritance, and solitude.
The FSCI helps adult orphans who find themselves alone and destitute. It provides them with temporary accommodation in several Bulgarian towns. The FSCI set up the Centre Opportunity in Sofia, which offers young people:
The Centre Opportunity also hosts a soap-making workshop HOPe Soap, which allows young adults to learn a profession and start a career.
The Air Liquide Foundation is supporting the FSCI's working by helping it acquire the equipment the Centre Opportunity needs to provide its services. The Foundation is also involved in acquiring equipment for the soap production workshops.
