ARPEJe's main activity is the psychosocial reintegration of isolated teenagers and young adults, who are often very socially and/or psychologically vulnerable, through customized support. The association has multiple aims: to bring in, support, accommodate and reintegrate young people whose social and professional progression is monitored. One of ARPEJe's reintegration programs for young people is an association-run shipyard in the Bordeaux region. Every year, ARPEJe works with around 20 young people on the shipyard, which opened in 2009.
The shipyard allows young people to work in a collaborative social environment and participates in building their future career.
This association-run shipyard enables young people to take part in a variety of activities (woodwork, ship framework building, etc.) with support from ARPEJe’s teams of social workers, educators, and psychologists, as well as support from carpenters and technical presenters. These teams work together to create tools in order to monitor the young people's progress following the work sessions. The project's ultimate objective is to launch a schooner – "the Hippocampe" – in the spring of 2017. Future plans to operate the ship – educational excursions, environmental protection assignments, discovery journeys and charity and social tourism – will be designed with and for young people, with the aim of facilitating their reintegration into society.
The Air Liquide Foundation is supporting ARPEJe by financing the acquisition of navigation equipment, wood, and hardware to fit out the ship's interior.
