The pollution caused by conventional farming, the population's high level of urbanization, and food waste encourage the development of environmentally friendly local market gardening using organic waste.
According to the dynamics of a circular economy, La Ferme du Quartier wants to combine aquaculture and integrated farming within a 100 m² urban farming greenhouse. Freshwater lobsters are placed in trays under the plants and fed with organic waste from collective catering in particular. The nutrients produced by the crustaceans are then absorbed by the plants, which helps them grow. Small-scale prototypes have already been successfully experimented.
This experiment is being carried out in the premises of CEEBIOS (Centre Européen d’Excellence en Biomimétisme - European Center for Excellence in biomimetism) on its site in Senlis, north of Paris.
The Air Liquide Foundation is contributing to the pilot urban greenhouse project by financing its construction, and by buying among others irrigation and heating systems.
