The Air Liquide Foundation is involved in a project for building a seeing-eye dog training center for vision-impaired young people initiated by the association Mira Europe.
Until now, in France and elsewhere in Europe, a vision-impaired young person had to wait until he or she became a legal adult before being able to obtain a seeing-eye dog. Minors had to contact the Fondation Mira in Quebec and go to Canada to obtain a dog.
The construction of the Mira Europe training school in L’Isle sur la Sorgue, in the Vaucluse (France), will allow young Europeans to acquire a dog directly in Europe. A seeing-eye dog favors the autonomy and self-development of handicapped young people, helps them get about safely and therefore facilitates their school and social integration.
The purpose of the association Mira Europe is to train and give about 15 dogs each year to blind teenagers. The first buildings should be functional in July 2010.

A word from the sponsor:
Marie-Gabrielle Briolle, Sales Manager, Air Liquide Gaz Industriel Services Région Sud-Est (France)
“In order to evaluate the seriousness of the project, I contacted local institutions and I met the president of the association Mira Europe, Frédéric Gaillane. Before the creation of this school, a child who wanted to have a dog had to go to Canada. This project, which is already well under way, is quite serious and deserves all our attention.”
