For the second time, the Air Liquide Foundation is helping the Apodi community by permitting it to develop and structure an apiculture activity.
Agronomes et Vétérinaires sans Frontières (AVSF) promotes the development of agriculture and animal raising in peasant communities threatened by poverty, hunger and exclusion. By making available the skills of agronomists and veterinarians, the association provides them with technical and financial aid and trains them in the sustainable management of natural resources and the development of animal raising. It also gives them access to fair trade.
In Brazil, desertification and the lack of local economic activities are threatening the state of Rio Grande do Norte. Traditional agriculture generates little income and processing and commercialization opportunities are limited. In addition, the local vegetation – caatinga – is fragile and very sensitive to desertification.
The Air Liquide Foundation has worked with the AVSF to develop apiculture in this region. Rapidly profitable, this activity valorizes local natural resources and helps preserve biodiversity through pollination by bees.
In 2010, the Foundation permitted 200 beekeepers to benefit from a training and awareness program thanks to which they were able to increase their income by 10 to 15%. Continued in 2011, the Foundation’s support aims at improving the producers’ storage capacity so that they can sell their honey at the best time.
