Renovation of the Touria Sekkat middle school in Morocco

The Air Liquide Foundation is rehabilitating the Touria Sekkat middle school in Casablanca, Morocco.

Initiatives - logoThe Initiatives association, founded in 2004 in Casablanca, brings together and coordinates the efforts of corporate citizens around projects on sustainable development in Casablanca’s disadvantaged neighborhoods. It more particularly supports the rehabilitation of schools and the creation of playing fields.

In Casablanca’s poor areas, 40% of the inhabitants are illiterate. The children who live in them are often excluded from the education system as poverty favors dropping out of school. Seeing this situation, the Initiatives association fights to reduce this schooling failure.

Among its many programs, the association has been involved in 2010 in rehabilitating the Touria Sekkat middle school located in Lahraouiyine, one of the poorest areas in Casablanca. Despite an admission capacity of 350 students, the school has opened its doors to 1,200 children.

In the framework of extending the school, the Air Liquide Foundation participated in financing the construction of a new building comprising four classrooms, with an admission capacity of 50 students each, and the renovation of the courtyard and recreation area.

The objectives: improving the study conditions for the neighborhood’s children, reducing absenteeism and encouraging children who have dropped out of school to enroll.
