The Air Liquide Foundation is pitching in to finance the equipment needed at the De La Salle Continuing and Occupational Education Center, which is training 140 welders in Douala, Cameroun.
For fifteen years now, the De La Salle Continuing and Occupational Education Center has been offering occupational training for unskilled adults in the areas of computers and industrial techniques. By forging special partnerships with local businesses, the Center also helps the young adults who successfully complete its program find work in the community.
Cameroun has initiated several ambitious nationwide projects (dams, port areas, power plants, factory expansions) that require the services of hundreds of skilled welders. Businesses have a hard time finding local people with the requisite skill set. As a result, they tend to look beyond their own borders while the local population remains under-employed.
The Air Liquide Foundation is supporting the Center’s efforts to train Cameroonian adults in the basic techniques of welding. By outfitting the training rooms, 140 new students can be accommodated and the life of the program perpetuated. The future welders will be able to find work locally, in particular with the Center’s business partners.
